Antique Japanese Zenga scroll painting. Calligraphy in long, vertical composition in ink on paper. The artist’s name is Nukina Kaioku (1778–1863), signing this one as 菘翁 Sūō.
(The first character means ‘field-mustard’, or sometimes ‘turnip’; the second means ‘old man’.)

The calligraphy reads:
めでたくかしく
Medetaku kashiku
(Medetaku means “happily/auspiciously”; it’s the same word as o-medetō gozaimasu “congratulations”)

The top seal says
快活
Kaikatsu “Vivacious” / “Cheerful”

The very lowest seal has another of his names:
君茂
Kunmo. Signed, sealed and with original signed box.

Dimensions: Total size: 79 1/2″ high x 14 1/2″ wide (16 1/4″ wide including rollers). Size of Art: 48″ high x 12 3/4″ wide
