Antique Chinese monochrome porcelain vase with dripping Flambé (Jingdezhen Jun) glaze. Because the glaze effect is made by the combining of various colors and thus the fusing of different minerals, it is also called Transmutation glaze. Developed through the Yongzheng emperor’s interest in antiquities, this type of glazed vessel was often commissioned by the court of Beijing. Artists were encouraged to experiment and develop interesting new glaze effects. This vase clearly exemplifies the lush colors used at the time. Flambé glaze was generously applied and became fluid at high temperatures, adhering it to the kiln floor, thus creating the lovely drips and occasional chipping of the base where it needed to be detached.

Age: Qing Dynasty (19th century)

Dimensions: 5 1/2″ high x 2 12″ wide
