Description
Beautiful Japanese 4-panel byobu (folding screen painting), depicting a scene of noble men racing horses. The horses (one brown bay and one gray dappled) are painted with wonderful detail and character, the rider in front looks behind him as his horse rears up. In the background rolling green hills are spotted with moss, just behind the riders is a wooden balcony with sudari (bamboo window coverings) blowing in the wind. The beach and surrounding mist is all made of gold leaf. The byoby painting is framed in antique obi silk with subtle chrysanthemum pattern.
Meiji Period (1868 – 1912)
