Fan Ho photograph of a shopping district. Figures ride bikes and walk between rows of shops marked with tall signs. Two street cars run on tracks through the center of the composition. There is a faint outline of mountains in the distance. Signed on the matte in pencil.

Fan Ho (1931-2016) was an award winning Chinese photographer, film director and actor. Born in Shanghai, he moved to Hong Kong when he was young and began photographing candid images of urban life with his Brownie camera. At age 14 his father purchased a Rolleiflex twin lens camera for him and his photographs matured.
He became a film director and actor in the 1960’s, directing over 20 films with studios in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
In 1979 Ho and his family moved to San Jose, California where he pursued a university education. After retiring from cinema in 1995, Ho printed new composites of his early photographs of Hong Kong’s streets and people. These photographs of life in Hong Kong prior to modernization received much international attention and appreciation. Fan Ho was represented by Modernbook Editions and his photographs are in the permanent collection of SFMOMA.
