Description
An antique Japanese Ko Tansu (personal storage chest) made of Suginoki (Cryptomeria) wood. Original wiped lacquer finish and hand made iron fittings. Gumbai style handles on the drawer fronts and the side carrying handles. Straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nail construction.
Tansu such as these were used by family members to store letters, documents, small valuables and keepsakes making it easy to stay organized. Present day functional uses for the chest include using it as an elegant side table or a useful bedside nightstand.<br.
Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
