Description
A dramatic cross section of agatized fossil coral, Florida. The after-coral pseudomorph was created when sediment covered a coral reef. Over time the calcium carbonate skeleton of the coral was replaced by chalcedony, creating the bubbly appearing crystal growth (botryoidal formation). The orange hues on the edges are carnelian agate.
Age: Miocene (25-32 million years)
Dimensions: 9 3/4″ long x 5 1/2″ wide x 2 3/4″ deep
