Description

Chinese carved wooden toggle depicting a kneeling horse, dating to the Qing dynasty (18th–19th century). The horse is rendered with rounded, simplified forms and a calm, grounded posture, emphasizing mass and presence rather than fine surface detail.

Carved from dense boxwood or fruitwood, the surface displays a warm, naturally developed patina with darker tones settled into the recesses from age and handling. The restrained modeling and horizontal composition are characteristic of Chinese scholar objects and belt toggles of the period.

Horses in Chinese symbolism represent strength, endurance, and advancement in status, making this both a decorative and auspicious accessory.
