A rare and highly refined antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant chest) from the Takayama region, dating to the late Edo period (circa 1800s). This exceptional example showcases the strength and beauty of traditional Japanese cabinetry, combining functional merchant design with elevated craftsmanship.

Constructed from solid keyaki (elm) wood, the chest features a rich, dynamic grain throughout, complemented by striking keyaki burl front sliding panels. The natural figuring of the burl creates a dramatic visual contrast against the straight grain of the surrounding wood, highlighting the artisan’s careful material selection.

The layout is particularly distinctive, with an unusual drawer configuration and locking bar system, designed for both security and efficient organization—essential features for merchant use. The hand-forged iron hardware, including drawer pulls, corner brackets, and lock plates, adds both durability and a bold visual presence.

The chest retains its original translucent lacquer finish, allowing the depth and movement of the keyaki grain to remain visible while providing protection. This finish has developed a beautiful, warm patina over time, enhancing the overall character of the piece.

Choba tansu such as this were used by merchants to store valuables, documents, and daily business items, often placed in shop fronts as both functional storage and a statement of status and success.
