Passage, oil painting on panel by Ramona R. Mitchell (1938-2025)
An abstract painter whose life and work were shaped by movement, transformation, and a global artistic journey. Born Rosemarie Hilpert in Berlin during World War II, she and her family became war refugees and found refuge in Egypt, where she began her formal art training at the Academy des Beaux Arts in Cairo.
After studies in the United States and Germany, she built an art studio in Nairobi, Kenya, and began exhibiting her work internationally. It was in Kenya that she met her future husband, fellow artist Alex Mitchell, with whom she spent decades in Lake Forest, Illinois, teaching art and deepening her practice.
In retirement, she and Alex moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she continued to paint large-scale abstraction and teach yoga, integrating physical presence and spiritual inquiry into her creative life.
Across continents and decades, her work reflects a lifelong commitment to observation, presence, and the transformative capacities of color and form.
