Description
A pair of antique Japanese shokudai (燭台) candlesticks, crafted from wood and finished in a warm reddish-brown lacquer. These elegant altar candle stands feature tall cylindrical shafts rising from deeply carved lotus-form bases, each base composed of radiating petal forms symbolizing purity and enlightenment in Buddhist tradition.
The upper section of each stand is formed as a carved lotus bud supporting the iron candle holders, which retain their circular guards and prongs designed to secure traditional Japanese wax candles. The iron elements show an attractive aged patina, contrasting nicely with the warm lacquered wood.
Decorative hand forged metal collar fittings appear at the upper and lower sections of the shaft, reinforcing the structure while adding subtle ornamental detail. The lacquer finish enhances the natural grain of the wood and has developed a rich surface patina over time.
Shokudai candlesticks were traditionally used in Buddhist temples and household altars (butsudan), where they were placed in pairs flanking sacred images, incense burners, or ritual objects.
