Japanese single section tansu chest, crafted in the Meiji period and designed for neatly storing textiles. Constructed in Kuri (Chestnut) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods with rich, warm tones and a clear grain pattern, this chest features distinctive iron hardware including elaborate lock plates, corner brackets, and drawer pulls. Notably, several iron fittings display the Tokugawa family crest (mon)—a rare mark of prestige and historical connection.
The asymmetrical layout includes multiple drawers and a side compartment door with hidden drawers inside—typical of Japanese chests with their focus on security and practicality. This piece demonstrates excellent joinery and metal craftsmanship, and remains structurally sound.
