Description
An elegant antique Japanese six-panel byōbu (folding screen) beautifully painted in sumi ink, mineral pigments, and delicate flecks of gold (sunago) over gold leaf on paper. Framed with a finely woven textile border and finished with traditional black lacquered wood molding, the composition embodies the refined simplicity and poetic beauty of early twentieth-century Japanese painting.
The tranquil landscape depicts a dramatic rocky mountainside overlooking a gently meandering stream as it winds through the valley before flowing around weathered stones into calm waters below. Gracefully cascading willow branches descend from above, softening the composition and creating a sense of quiet movement. Pair of Ashy Minivets (Sanshōkui), delicately rendered in flight and at rest, bring life to the peaceful riverside scene while wisps of drifting mist evoke the changing atmosphere of the seasons.
Executed with confident brushwork and subtle tonal gradations, the artist skillfully balances expansive negative space with carefully observed natural forms. The restrained palette, accented by shimmering sunago gold, reflects the influence of traditional Japanese ink painting while embracing the refined decorative aesthetic of the Taishō period.
Signed by the artist, Kozan Seishi in the lower right corner, this screen is a sophisticated example of early twentieth-century Japanese decorative art, offering both an elegant architectural statement and a serene expression of nature.
