Description
A Japanese gunbai (軍配), a command fan historically associated with samurai generals and battlefield signaling, featuring a lacquered handle decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay (raden).
The gunbai is constructed with a dark brown lacquered wooden handle, elegantly finished and reinforced with decorative end fittings. Each end of the handle is ornamented with raden (螺鈿)—thin pieces of iridescent mother-of-pearl inlaid into the lacquer surface—creating a subtle geometric pattern that shimmers when viewed in changing light.
Suspended from one side is a dramatic cascade of long silver paper streamers, which fall freely in layered strands. A braided cord with tassel is attached to the opposite end, allowing the piece to be carried or suspended when not in use.
Historical Military Use
Gunbai—also known as gunbai uchiwa—were used by samurai commanders to signal orders to troops during battle. The fan allowed leaders to direct movement, indicate formations, and communicate commands across large groups of soldiers.
Historically, silver paper or foil was sometimes applied to gunbai to improve battlefield visibility. The reflective surface would catch sunlight, allowing the commander’s signals to be seen more clearly across a sunlit battlefield and helping relay instructions over long distances. Would make for a great addition to a samurai armor.
