This is an antique Japanese 3 section Isho Biraki Tansu (kimono storage chest with hinged doors) made of Kirinoki (Paulownia) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. Top section has a split level shelf behind the sliding doors with three small side by side drawers below the doors. Three removable kimono storage shelves hide behind the hinged doors on the center section while the bottom section has large spacious drawers.

There are inset exposed side handles on the bottom and center sections that serve a dual purpose. When kept in place, they act as interlocking connectors to secure the upper section and prevent it from moving about. When lifted up and out of the recess, they act as intended for use in carrying each section from location to location.

Tansu such as these became quite fashionable in Japan especially among those who needed to move often due to work. Since the sections split up, they can be configured and used in different parts of the house. Each section alone when empty is lightweight and easily carried by one person making it convenient, functional and versatile.br
Age: Taisho Era (pre 1920’s)

Dimensions: 35 3/4″ Wide x 60 7/8″ High x 16 5/8″ Deep
