An exceptional and unusual antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant’s chest) from the Edo period (1603–1868), crafted with a full keyaki (elm) wood front and top, showcasing a rich patina and dramatic natural grain.

This striking chest features a well-balanced and highly functional layout, centered around an elaborate locking bar system. The locking bar is adorned with finely worked iron hardware in the form of a bamboo stalk, a symbolic motif representing strength, resilience, and prosperity. This mechanism secures multiple drawers, including the upper section, and retains its original iron locks with one key, adding both historical integrity and visual impact.

The drawer configuration is both practical and aesthetically pleasing, with hand-forged iron pulls and escutcheons throughout. The lower section is fitted with sliding panel doors featuring vertical slats, behind which lies a hidden safe compartment (zenibako). This compartment includes two small interior drawers, also crafted from keyaki, designed for storing valuables, documents, or currency.

The chest is further reinforced with wooden side and back bracing, a hallmark of traditional tansu construction, ensuring durability while maintaining a refined silhouette. The substantial weight and solid construction speak to its original use in a merchant setting, where both security and presence were essential.

The surface retains its original condition, with a beautifully aged lacquer and patina that enhance the depth of the wood grain and the character of the ironwork.
