Description
Japanese Seto ware umanome “horse-eye” dish. Also called ishizara (stone ware) this type of sturdy plate with it’s iconic iron oxide glazed circular motif would have been used in a rural inn to serve hearty food to travelers.
An appreciation for the natural beauty of items made and used deftly by practiced hands became popular through the Mingei movement in the 20th century.
