Description
A well-proportioned Japanese tansu chest crafted from kiri (paulownia) wood, featuring a warm, natural surface with visible grain and age-appropriate patina. The façade is structured with a series of horizontal drawers, each accented by hand-forged iron pulls and distinctive circular lock plates that create a strong visual rhythm across the piece.
The hardware is both functional and decorative, with finely worked iron corner brackets, escutcheons, and drawer pulls that reflect traditional craftsmanship. The lower right section incorporates a side compartment with two smaller drawers, a characteristic element in tansu design used for organizing personal items and valuables.
Kiri wood was highly valued for its lightweight properties, resistance to humidity, and natural insect-repelling qualities, making it ideal for clothing and household storage. The clean lines and balanced proportions of this chest highlight the practical elegance central to Japanese furniture.
