Description
Japanese antique two section kasane isho tansu (chest on chest for clothing) from Yamagata Prefecture. Made of keyaki (zelkova elm) wood with original lacquer finish. The top section has two large drawers and one small exterior drawer above a safe box that opens to two small interior drawers. The bottom section has two large drawers. Iron hardware includes large, round lock plates decorated with crane and turtle designs. The crane and turtle together, called “Tsuru-Kame”, symbolize fidelity, prosperity and long life. The handles are faceted hirute form and there is extensive iron corner and side brackets as well as multiple handles on the sides of the chest for carrying.
