Description
An antique Japanese two-compartment lacquer inro, dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912).
The body of the inro is carved from lightweight kiri (paulownia) wood and features a highly geometric, three-dimensional texture. The overall surface is rendered in an even stippled pattern forming uniform miniature pyramidal studs finished in gold lacquer.
Suspended from the cord is a well-worn, oval-shaped bronze manju toggle. The manju is decorated with an intricate miniature landscape scene rendered in mixed metals (irogane) with fine inlaid gold detailing, and bears the signature of the artisan on the back. The ensemble comes with a custom metal stand for display.
Dimensions: size of case: 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″. (Total size of group on stand: 7 3/4″ high)
