Japanese antique carved lacquer box for holding Buddhist texts. Made of wood and decorated with carved symbols representing the Buddha’s footsteps in Buddhism. The word for the symbol,  ‘Swastika’ comes from the Sanskrit root su-asti, meaning ‘well-being’ or ‘good fortune.’  The symbol embodies the dharma wheel, or the wheel of law. The teaching of Buddha that leads to the dharma, the road to enlightenment.
The inside of the box is lined with Dutch lacquered and embossed leather with scenes of European figures and flowers.

Age: Edo Period (17th century)

Dimensions: 4 3/4″ high x 13 1/4″ long x 9 3/4″ wide

Description

Japanese antique carved lacquer box for holding Buddhist texts. Made of wood and decorated with carved symbols representing the Buddha’s footsteps in Buddhism.
