Chinese antique tomb pottery figure of a portly court lady, Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), 14.25″H with traces of original red and black pigments on sleeves and crevices of body. Minor repairs to hair and neck. Oxford TL Test results consistent with 9th century dating. Fat lady was depicting the famous concubine, Yang Gu Fei, her asymetric coiffure is Duo Maji, ‘just off horse look’ with disheveled hairdo. The fat lady image represented the peak of loveliness and was wonderfully popular during the Tang Dynasty. Sizes were regulated according to the class of society who were using the figures.
