An original antique  Japanese two-section tansu crafted during the Meiji period (late 19th century), showcasing the rich beauty of keyaki (Japanese elm) and traditional joinery techniques.

This chest is composed of two stackable sections, a hallmark of practical Japanese design—allowing for ease of transport, modular use, and adaptability within the home. The upper section features sliding doors (fusuma-style panels) with beautifully figured keyaki grain, opening to reveal interior storage traditionally used for folded garments or valuables. The carved wooden pulls and subtle decorative elements lend quiet refinement without overwhelming the natural material.

Below, multiple drawers of varying sizes provide functional storage, each fitted with hand-forged iron hardware—including warabite-style handles and traditional locking plates. The ironwork has developed a deep, aged patina, complementing the warm reddish-brown tones of the wood.

The keyaki grain throughout is particularly notable—displaying dramatic flowing patterns and depth, enhanced by time and use. The case is framed with solid corner posts and horizontal rails, emphasizing both durability and architectural presence.

Age: Meiji period 1868 – 1912

Dimensions: 69″ high x 36″ wide x 19″ deep
