Description
An original pair of Japanese Nihon Matsu style isho tansu chests, crafted in two sections and displayed side by side on a custom black iron base. Constructed from solid quarter sawn keyaki hardwood and sugi (ceder) using traditional joinery techniques, these chests retain their warm natural patina, highlighting the rich grain and depth of the timber.
The original iron hardware is particularly noteworthy, featuring finely worked motifs of Mount Fuji and the hawk (taka). Together, these designs symbolize ambition, strength, and auspicious fortune—Mount Fuji representing endurance and sacred beauty, while the hawk embodies keen vision and martial prowess.
This versatile and timeless form reflects the practical yet refined spirit of the Meiji era, when Japan transitioned into modernity while preserving centuries-old craftsmanship.
