A superb example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, this Isho Kasane Kimono Tansu is expertly handcrafted entirely from solid kiri (paulownia) wood, the most desirable material for storing fine silk kimonos due to its exceptional lightness, dimensional stability, and natural resistance to moisture and insects.

Constructed in the classic two-section (Kasane) form for ease of transport, the chest features four full-width drawers above a lower section with a large drawer and two graduated accessory drawers, providing versatile storage while maintaining elegant proportions. The warm natural grain of the aged kiri wood is beautifully complemented by its original hand-forged iron hardware, including substantial warabite-style drawer pulls, corner reinforcements, carrying handles, and distinctive circular lock plates with decorative chrysanthemum-form escutcheons. Traditional Japanese joinery throughout reflects the remarkable craftsmanship of the Meiji era.

With its clean architectural form, rich patina, and understated elegance, this authentic Isho Tansu is equally suited for a distinguished collection of Japanese antiques or as a sophisticated statement piece in a contemporary interior.

Age: Meiji Era (1890-1900)

Dimensions: 37 5/8″ wide by 16 3/4″ deep by 46 3/8″ high
