Description
A handsome antique Japanese 2-section Kasane Kimono Tansu, expertly crafted entirely from lightweight Kiri (paulownia) wood and distinguished by an exceptional array of traditional hand-forged iron hardware. The cabinet features a classic five-drawer configuration, with three drawers in the upper section and two drawers below, creating a beautifully balanced and highly functional form.
Each drawer is fitted with substantial Kakute-style iron handles, while the drawer fronts are framed by elaborate hand-forged corner fittings and striking traditional lock plates. The richly textured ironwork, with its softly scalloped and floral-inspired detailing, provides a dramatic contrast against the warm natural grain of the Kiri.
The two sections are designed as a Kasane Tansu, allowing the chest to be stacked vertically while retaining the distinctive proportions and craftsmanship characteristic of traditional Japanese storage furniture. Convenient iron carrying handles are mounted to both sides.
The combination of beautifully aged Kiri wood, robust forged iron fittings, scalloped lock plates, and restrained architectural design makes this an especially appealing example of traditional Japanese tansu craftsmanship. Its warm, understated presence would be equally at home in a sophisticated interior, private collection, or Japanese-inspired architectural setting.
