Antique Japanese Kannon Biraki Wedding Kimono Tansu, crafted entirely from Kiri (Paulownia) wood and retaining its impressive original hand-forged iron hardware. The two-section chest features distinctive outward-opening Kannon Biraki doors with an oversized circular iron lock plate and extensive decorative iron strapping, giving the piece a bold yet elegant character.

The upper section opens to reveal a beautifully arranged interior of drawers and compartments traditionally suited to storing formal wedding kimono, obi, hair ornaments, and other treasured accessories. The lower section provides additional full-width storage drawers. Side carrying handles on both sections reflect the traditional construction of Japanese tansu. There is a secret box hidden behind the lower small drawer behind the right hinged door.  Small valuables and important folded documents were stored there for security and safety.

The beautifully aged Kiri has developed a warm, natural patina that contrasts beautifully with the dark, hand-forged iron fittings. A handsome and highly decorative example of traditional Japanese Meiji-period wedding furniture.

Age: Meiji Era (circa 1880-1890)

Dimensions: 38″ wide by 16 1/4″ deep by 40 3/8″ high
