Description
An exceptionally elegant Japanese four panel folding screen (byōbu) depicting a richly composed garden scene of blooming chrysanthemums (kiku) arranged before a beautifully stylized bamboo or garden fence.
Executed against a warm, softly shimmering gold-toned ground, the screen presents chrysanthemums in an appealing palette of white, crimson, coral, ochre, and muted green. The flowers are rendered with considerable decorative sensitivity, while the geometric bamboo fencing creates a striking counterpoint to the organic forms of the blossoms. Fine black structural lines, delicate mineral pigments, and scattered stippling across the gold ground lend the composition both depth and an atmospheric, timeworn beauty.
The asymmetrical arrangement and sophisticated juxtaposition of naturalistic flowers with bold geometric elements reflect the enduring influence of the Rinpa tradition, one of Japan’s most celebrated schools of decorative painting. Chrysanthemums, long associated with autumn and with enduring beauty in Japanese art, are particularly effective here as the principal motif.
The screen retains its traditional four panel folding format with a dark textile-covered frame, allowing the composition to unfold dramatically when displayed. Its generous proportions make it equally compelling as a room divider, architectural accent, or statement work of Japanese decorative art.
