Antique Japanese bronze temple lantern dating to the Meiji period (late 19th century), executed in a classic and architecturally balanced form. This elegant work reflects the refined metal craftsmanship associated with Buddhist temple furnishings.
The lantern features a gracefully proportioned body with openwork panels, allowing light to disperse in a soft, atmospheric manner. The upper section is crowned with a decorative finial and stylized flame-form element, while the gently curved legs elevate the structure with visual lightness and stability. The surface presents a rich, naturally aged bronze patina consistent with period examples. Single hinged compartment opens to reveal the inside compartment.
Prominently displayed are the Myōuga (茗荷) family crest, commonly referred to as the “double ginger” motif. The myōga symbol holds deep cultural significance in Japan, historically associated with protection, prosperity, and auspicious fortune. Its use here suggests the lantern’s connection to traditional ritual, temple, or ceremonial contexts.
