Description
A superb antique Japanese bronze Teaburi (手焙) masterfully cast in high relief with an elegant procession of phoenix (hō-ō), the revered mythical birds symbolizing virtue, renewal, prosperity, and imperial grace. The deeply sculpted birds sweep around the body with extraordinary movement, their flowing tails and finely detailed plumage creating a striking sense of rhythm and vitality.
The removable pierced lid continues the phoenix motif with an intricate openwork design that originally allowed the gentle warmth of glowing charcoal to radiate while releasing subtle fragrance. Flanking the vessel are beautifully modeled mythical bird-form escutcheons, each supporting a substantial bronze ring handle, an exceptional decorative feature that reflects the refined craftsmanship of Japan’s celebrated Meiji bronze workshops. Traditional key-fret and lotus-petal borders further enrich the classical design, while the warm, naturally aged bronze patina enhances every carved detail.
Originally intended as a personal hand warmer (teaburi) for use during the colder months, this elegant vessel today serves equally well as a distinguished display piece, embodying the artistic excellence of Meiji metalwork. Its impressive sculptural decoration, harmonious proportions, and exceptional casting make it a desirable acquisition for collectors of fine Japanese bronzes, Buddhist art, and Meiji decorative arts. Artist seal at the base.
