Description
A very large antique scroll painting by the famous artist Kano Tsunenobu. Sumi-e on Gofun paper depicting a fierce flying dragon amongst turbulent waves and mist protecting a sacred jewel, the Hoju held in its claw and peeking through the gray cloud. This image evokes power and energy. When displayed by a Daimyo or lord, it would exude strength, influence and stature.
Kano Tsunenobu (1636-1713) was a Japanese painter of the Kano School. He first studied under his father, Kano Naonubu, and then his uncle, Kano Tanyu, after the death of his father. He became a master painter and succeeded his uncle Tanyu as head of the Kano school in 1674. It is believed many works attributed to Tanyu might actually be Tsunenobu, but it is difficult to know since they often worked on larger pieces together.
