Description
Antique Chinese monochrome porcelain water coupe with dripping Flambé (Jingdezhen Jun) glaze. Appealing round form with low foot and wide mouth. Beautiful plum color glaze with bluish-purple drips. The inside is glazed a deep, mottled blue. The underside of the coupe has a cafe-au-lait glaze and is impressed with a six character Qianlong mark (1736-1795).
Because the glaze effect is made by the combining of various colors and thus the fusing of different minerals, it is also called Transmutation glaze. Developed through the Yongzheng emperor’s interest in antiquities, this type of glazed vessel was often commissioned by the court of Beijing. Artists were encouraged to experiment and develop interesting new glaze effects.
