A vintage Japanese 2 section special Kamo Tansu kimono chest made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) and Kuwanoki (Mulberry) wood. The Kiri wood comes from the Aizu region of Japan which is well known for its high quality of Kiri lumber while the handle and trim accents were made of hand carved Kuwa. The wood is very thick and dense while the parts fit so perfectly that the interior of the tansu is nearly air tight keeping the valuable silk kimonos dry. The top portion has sliding panels covering a personal compartment with a shelf and two small drawers on the right and a shelf on the left. One of the small interior drawers has writing on the inside with presumably the maker’s name which he was proud to showcase. In addition, there are 7 stacked full width drawers with drawer pulls designed as stylized Chrysanthemum blossoms.

Age: Late 20th Century

Dimensions: 68″ High by 41 3/4″ Wide by 18″ Deep
