Description
Rare Chinese large and beautifully sculpted terra cotta figure of a farmer. Standing with a long spade and a handleless shovel in his hands, he tilts his head slightly upward as if surveying his crops or checking the weather. He is dressed in boots and a hat and his robe is secured around his waist with a belt from which hangs another tool or knife. Sculpted with the simplified geometric proportions traditional during the Han period but unusually large in scale. Intended for burial, this farmer would have insured a noble person’s continued source of food as well as someone to take care of his livestock and farm in the afterlife. On a custom metal stand. With TL (thermal luminescent) test.
Age: Han Dynasty 202 BC – 220 AD
Dimensions: 32 1/2″ high (33 1/2″ high on stand)
